The African country's cyber incident response team is said to have issued more than 16,000 threat advisories during the four-month period

Kenya had over 37.1 million cyberattacks in the fourth quarter of 2019, the country's communications authority said in a recent report, predicting that cyber security incidents will continue to rise.

According to the authority's official overview of the sector during the September-to-December period, the number of cyberattacks represented an increase of over 40% from 25.2 million in the preceding quarter.

The authority attributed the rise to a high number of threats detected, with over 34.8 million malware threats, 1.9 million web application attacks and 346,000 DDoS or botnet threats.

The data was provided by the National Kenya Computer Incident Response Team - Coordination Center (KE-CIRT/CC), which issued more than 16,000 cyber threat advisories during the quarter, according to the authority.

The KE-CIRT/CC "has deployed various cyber threat detection systems towards enhancing Kenya’s national cyber security readiness and resilience," the report said.

"Emerging telecommunication challenges such as cybersecurity incidents are likely to increase and evolve at a similar rate and therefore, the relevant government institutions and stakeholders will need to continuously review and where necessary revise the existing national laws, policies and regulations in order to address these challenges, while enhancing innovation," the report said.
