First Deputy Mayor of Tel Aviv-Yafo; Former Consul General of Israel in New York, Israel
Asaf Zamir (b. 1980) is an Israeli politician and public figure, currently serving as the First Deputy Mayor of Tel Aviv-Yafo. He previously served as Consul General of Israel in New York and as a Member of Knesset for the Blue and White party, where he also held the role of Minister of Tourism.
Zamir studied at A.D. Gordon School and Ironi D High School in Tel Aviv. He was active in the Israeli Scouts movement and the Federation of Young Students and Workers Youth Movement. During his military service, he served in the Israeli Air Force’s central control unit. He holds a law degree from Tel Aviv University and a degree in French culture from Sorbonne University.
During his legal internship, Zamir began forming a municipal movement representing Tel Aviv-Yafo’s younger generation. In 2008, his party, Rov Ha'Ir, won three seats in the City Council, and at age 28, he became the city’s youngest Deputy Mayor. In this role, he focused on affordable housing, youth engagement, alternative transportation, and the development of nightlife and tourism, while promoting LGBTQ+ rights and sports initiatives.
In subsequent elections, Rov Ha'Ir grew in influence, securing six seats in 2018, making it the second-largest party in the council. As Acting Mayor, Zamir oversaw the city’s education portfolio, including the construction of schools and programs promoting coexistence between religious, secular, Jewish, and Arab communities.
In 2019, Zamir joined Blue and White, entering the 21st Knesset and subsequently serving in the 22nd and 23rd Knessets. In May 2020, he was appointed Minister of Tourism. From 2021 to 2023, he served as Consul General of Israel in New York, strengthening ties between Jewish communities and Israel.
Zamir is married to actress Maya Wertheimer, and they have a daughter and a son. The family resides in Tel Aviv.
