The Washington Post said on May 18 that the recent cyberattack against an Iranian port was carried out by Israel in retaliation for Iran's cyberattack against Israel's national water infrastructure, and, as reported several days earlier by Cybertech's Amir Rapaport, is part of a new cyber war between the two countries.

Intelligence and cyber security sources were quoted as saying that the assault that shut down operations at the port was carried out by Israeli cyber actors. A foreign defense source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, was quoted as saying the attack was highly precise and caused much more serious damage than what Iran has admitted.

In a column by Cybertech's Amir Rapaport on May 15, Arik Brabbing, former head of the Israel Security Agency's SigInt and Cyber Division, described how the incident could have widespread implications worldwide and could even be the opening shot in a new type of war.
